Hello, I need to ascertain whether a portion of a DVD (DVD extra) was simply ripped from another DVD.
I.E. DVD1 has an extra on it. I need to find out if DVD2 which contains the same extra simply lifted the file from DVD1 - and proving that DVD1 was the source of data.
Is there any way of discovering this?
Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

I suspect the strict answer to that is "no", but you may be able to get an extremely good idea.
If it really was a simple rip, various attributes between the underlying files are likely to be identical - file size, compression settings and bitrates etc - and if that's the case it's extremely likely that the answer to your question is "yes". I don't know the exact circumstances of the case you describe, but it is possible that the programme may have been compressed to an MPEG file and that same file to form the basis for mastering both DVD 1 and DVD 2. So the file attributes will also be identical, but DVD2 not come from DVD1, rather them share a common source.
Alternatively, it could be a case of a rip, but the material then edited, even if only slightly, or even simply recompressed. Which will give it differing attributes to the form it had in DVD 1.
Is that of any help?

I suspect the strict answer to that is "no", not to be certain, but you may be able to get an extremely good idea.

Re: Attributes of DVD disc and individual VOB
I was thinking more of the source code of a file itself. Not knowing a lot about this stuff - i was of the opinion that files can be ripped apart and a string of code will be present. I'd asumme if my above conjecture was accurate there would be a tie between products.

That's what I mean - the "string of code" would be the underlying MPEG file. And simple ripping would mean just extracting it and putting it unchanged into the second DVD. But is the problem that it came off the first DVD - or that there was access to the original coded file at all?
I can appreciate you may not want to give too much detail about what may be a confidential circumstance, but it's impossible to really give you significant advice without knowing more of the story.
And the "string of code" could be reedited and/or recompressed so that attributes would change. (File sizes, bitrates etc.) If you suspect copyright has been infringed, is it not sufficient just to go on the content - identical frames, lengths of shot, etc?

Re: Attributes of DVD disc and individual VOB
It's all conjecture at this point, but I have reason to believe it was taken off the first disc, yes.
It's been suggested to me that I (perhaps accidently) put the file on memory stick with the other extras which I doubt as I'm very careful with what i send and said file was not even on the NLE system I was working on, however without doubt once I receive the sticks back I will will be able to determine whether this was the case or not.
Attributes would of had to have been changed also as the DVD's are from different territories.
