Do BD-REs automatically re-write over previously recorded material regardless of the availability of un-used recording capacity on the disc, i.e. they don't wait until "full" before recording over previous material?
I have in mind being able to record to BD-RE, play back the recording, and then add further additional material.

They work like DVD-RWs - you generally have to erase them completely before writing all-new material to them.
confirming Mooblie comment. Every editing programme I have used erases the Disc whether BD or DVD before burning new data. The only disc I know off that doesn't need erasing and you can put additional data on is a DVD-Ram which can only be used mostly on certain stand alone recorders. I have two panasonics that use these discs as well as others.

You mean DVD-RAM
DVD ROM is read only , thats what ROM means.
You can create a dvd disc with a closed session and ability to add others , but they don't comply with the DVD video compliance rules.
correction noticed and acted on. Good that somebody is on the ball after the festivities.
