Hi. I run windows XP and evrything works ok except the Disc Defragmente which works ok with the C hard drive but won't defrag drive E which is my second internal hard drive.
when asked to defrag the E drive it freezes and a message tells me it's not responding and I have to close down the PC and reboot to carry on using the PC. I have tried error checking and attepting to find and cure bad sectors. This took a couple of hours and made no difference. It still crashes when asked to defrag that one drive. Any ideas what could be wrong?

no idea what's wrong but when I used a PC I gave up defraying.

I just copied my files top a sopare drive, reformatted the now clear drive, and put them back
It was quicker and probably cleaner

Is there a problem? If so the drive could actually be failing & that's why defrag won't work.

Info here may help:-

Hope this helps.

Hi Gavin. As I said in my opening post I have tried error checking and repairing bad sectors. result no errors found and the bad sector repair gave no results. The Defrag still doesn't work. Thanks for your link, it's contents seem very complicated. I'm away on holiday for a fortnight so I'll look at it in detail when I come back. Thanks again

Hi Roy,

I use a mac with FCS2 now, although I have my old PC to use for web surfing until it dies

I presume the disc isn't nearly full, defrsging needs some headroom to work.

Download defraggler @ http://www.piriform.com/defraggler , and see if it can defrag the drive.

Thanks for all the info and links. I have just arrived back from holiday to find half the electrical circuits out of action and the central heating out of action. The heating engineer can't fathom the problem except that there is no power to the pump, so it will be sometime before I get round to trying advice given. Will report back when I can.

Hi All. I tried the defragler programme suggested by Gary. It worked but is took all day to do it's work. Why it took this long I don't know but it was worth the wait. Windows defragment programme is not working on the particular drive and I shall never no why. It may be since updates were downloaded. However no errors or trouble has been detected on the drive, so I'll leave well alone for the moment. Thanks everyone
