My Toshiba DVD player/HDD recorder has given up the ghost, can members suggest a replacement - keeping costs to a reasonable figure.   Thanks.

Hi Tony

I'd consider this Panasonic which is still available only discontinued

or the newer model

HD recording
Archive to an external hard drive
Catch up TV
LAN
DVD upscaling

Cheers

Sorry I originally posted the wrong link, It doesn't look like archiving to DVD is an option nowadays......unless you go for

Thanks for the reply John; I tried my usual litmus test and looked at Amazon customer opinions (1 and 2 stars). There were sufficient adverse comments to make me reluctant to dive in and buy at the moment.  indecision

Hi Tony

My oldest Panasonic HD/DVD recorder is 10 years old and still going, I also have another one I bought in 2008, maybe the newer models aren't so robust?

There seem to be more restrictions to archiving on the newer machines these days, although a load more features
My Humax Freesat box covers most of my current needs for timeshifting, playing mp4's and catchup, it doesn't play DVD's though wink

Do you have a replacement in mind for your Tosh yet?

Good luck

Not as yet, but I wondered if a Humax might be sufficient for most of my time shift needs, and perhaps a seperate DVD player for the rare occasions I play a dvd ( usually 'on demand' by grandchildren ).

Re: DVD player/HDD recorder recommendations

I have had two humax boxes and was happy with both.

I now use a sony bluray 5.1 sound system all the time and run the human through it, playing DVDs maybe once a month.

You can always add a DVD recorder to the back of the Humax if you need to dump to disc.
Humax ( and others?) don't allow HDMI to DVD for copyright reasons, use analogue
It is a pain sometimes not to be able to pass a disc/tape to a mate, but that's progress and there is iplayer
