maps for route planning

I need maps for use in heroglyph. I have tried to use Google maps, but with no luck in downloading them. It's probably my age. I need  to be able to zoom in so the resolution needs to be high. Any suggestions?

Thanks for link.
I left out the part about Maps for the USA west coast.
I am trying to put together about 30 hrs of road trip tapes and i wanted to map the journey at various points
