I am also pulling my hair out over this stuff.

I feel like I have tried everything. Setup is as follows:

Canon MV30 (Optura Pi in the US)
Pal format

Sony Vaio Laptop
XP Pro SP1
DirectX 8.1
Built in firewire (OHCI IEEE in device manager)
Also have Belkin firewire PCMCIA card (NEC IEEE in device manager)

Nothing is detected in Device manager at all when the camera is plugged in.

I have tried every combination of camera on/off, mains power on/off, reboot with camera on/off etc etc etc…………...

I have also installed Win98, Win2K, and SuSE Linux without success. Am now back to completely clean install in WinXP Pro.

I have tried many combination of manual driver changes and the problem quite simply seems that the PC cant see the camera.

I know the firewire ports on the Laptop are fine (I have connected to another Laptop using them).

The closest I have got to any sign of life was that the Laptop would hang every couple of seconds when the camera was on. Despite this nothing was detected in Device Manager.

Am about to try the camera on someone elses PC, and also their camera on mine……..

Is there anything else I can try?!? Scared to death it’s the camera (bought it second hand) but its in such mint condition and the plugs look fine it doesn't seem likely.

Thanks so much for all those that have posted problems/ideas… strange satisfaction knowing I'm not the only one suffering with this stuff.

Dv Camera : JVC Gr-DVL (PAL) 308

Laptop:
Windows XP home with service pack
Mobile AMD Athlon XP 2500+
512 MB Ram
Mobility Radeon 9000
Dont know what the firewire is called

I am having problems connecting my dv cam to my laptop. I get a 61883 error. I read through the entire thread and I updated my windows xp home with the service pack 1a, but that did not help.
I donwloaded the latest jvc capture software, that did not help either. I also tried dowloading and installing DvConnect340 which also didnt work for me.

the weird thing is though that I am able to connect my camera to a friends laptop who had quite a similair set-up. And he is able to connect his Canon Dv to my laptop with no problems. So I am guessing its maybe the fire wire that is incompatible and less of a driver thing ???
Or if the problem is Windows XP as allot of people say then how about if I set up my system to be able to boot up in windows 98 and xp. So I would be able to get the video through 98 and then use XP to edit it ?
Help me guys, dont know what to do next.

What FireWire-capable video editing software are you using to access the camcorder?

Also, what version of DirectX are you running.

* camcorder(s:
- SONY TRV355E DIGITAL-8
- JVC / THOMPSON VMD3 MINI-DV

* format:
- PAL

* version of XP:
-PROFESSIONAL

* fireWire card:
- ADVE-9011HE

* video editing software:
- AVID Xpress DV 3.5

Everything is working well now, (both cameras / camcorders recognised and playing out (into compu), and the Sony 355 D8 playing in well (playing out form compu, as well as working well with those Hi-8 tapes! (Got a good deal @ DABS)
...but I had some serious problems in the beginning.

First of all, Windows XP would not recognise the camcorders. When they were plugged in I kept getting the yellow exclamation mark in the Device Manager, & the device reported as "AV/C Subunit driver".
Solution: (discovered on DV-Doc)
Find file that starts with "Msdv.inf.1/f1" (Set to view 'Hidden folders'.)
Rename it "Msdv.inf".

I also had a serious set-back when I downloaded some Windows Updates - it totally corrupted my system and I had to reinstall everything. -Don't do it!!

In addtion, in order to get my Avid program working with Windows, I had to delete the Hotfix 824141.

Finally, had serious compatibility issues with Avid & Windows, although I managed to sort the problem when I discovered that:

-Avid Xpress DV 3.0 - ONLY works with Windows 2000
&
-Avid Xpress DV 3.5 - ONLY works with Windows XP

Good luck everyone,

Pixela Imagemixer & Cyberlink Powerdirector are both FireWire-capable video editing software as mentioned.

I am using version 9.0b (4.09.0000.0902) of DirectX.

The HP nx9010 (DV448P) laptop I'm using has a 4 pin firewire port and USB 2.0 port.

Camcorder: Sony DCR TRV80E (miniDV)
Format: PAL
Operating system: Windows XP Pro SP1 and SP2 (have tried with both)
Firewire card: OrangeLink FW400/800

Video editing software; have tried too many to list here, they are probably not the problem.

I cannot get the above combo to work at all. I have tried setting the driver for the FW-card to standard (OHCI..), OrangeLink, and what not. No go.

Every time I turn the camera on to do some capture from a recorded tape, Windows XP tells me it has detected a Sony TRV80E, lists it in the device manager as "Other/unknown device" and then asks me for a driver disk.

I have asked everywhere I can think of, to no avail :-(

So, until this is resolved, I won't be doing much editing. Perhaps I should junk both the camera and the card.

when asked for drivers point the system at

c:\windows\inf\msdv.inf that should work.

did you have any specific drivers supplied with the card ?

I have the TRV80E. It is a great camera and works perfectly with my setup.

Firstly I would say try another OHCI Firewire card. Try one with a Texas Instruments based controller as these seem to cause the fewest of compatibility problems.

If still no go then try your camera in a system where you know the firewire works.
It may be the firewire lead.

Good luck

Any idea where I can find an up-to-date list with such firewire cards? I can add another FW card to my machine, and if it's only FW400 then so be it, I'll use it for the cam only - just as long as I get it working.

I have tried pointing it to MSDV.INF, to no avail.

I have now replaced my OrangeLink firewire card with an Adaptec FireConnect 8300; and now the problem is even worse (see above). Now the system refuses to load the drivers for the card (error code 10).

The card is detected and drivers "installed" (Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant 1394 device, or something like it) .. aaaargh!

Aye, ACPI is enabled; not even sure I can disable it (this is a HP Workstation XW4100). I've tried seating in the second slot away from the AGP, and now it's seated in the third slot away from the AGP.

OK; got the card working by doing this:

Start->Run->"cmd"

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
start devmgmt.msc

Then I removed *everything* that looked like 1394 and OHCI.

Re-started XP.

When XP booted, it said it had detected a new device and started installing drivers. Lo and behold (!), my firewire disk started spinning up.

So now the card works OK.

And now I have a *different* problem when I power up the Sony DCR TRV80E miniDV camcorder. Instead of saying it has detected a "Sony TRV80E", it says it has detected a "Sony DV-VCR". It asks for drivers but cannot find any (and there are none). I pointed it to MSDV.INF, but that didn't help either :-(

As there are no similar threads "does your cancorder work with 98, ME 2000" could we please print some sort of summary on whether XP is ok or not for NLE, as we may all have to update to something of the sort in due course - wading through all this lot is getting tiresome!!!!

that is an impossible question to answer.

all peoples pc's will be 'slightly' different from anyone elses and so we cannot guarantee that xp is ok for nle on all machines with any editing card.

i can catagorically say that the following work for me.

rt2000 : winxp : asus motherboard : p3-500
rt2000 : winxp : gateway (intel) : p3-1400
ieee1394 : winxpsp2 : sony rx305 : p4-2ghz
storm2 : winxpsp2 : tyan thunder : 2x xeon 2.2ghz

premiere 6.5 runs on all of the above
edius 2.5 runs on machines 2 , 3 and 4

you could of course go visit www.stablenle.com and search there for the same hardware you have and see if people there have win xp working for them.

I have a PANASONIC DMR-E20 and a Matrox Rtx 100. My operating system is Windows Xp pro with sp1! The broadcast type is PAL and I'm using Adobe premiere 6.5
My problem is that when I connect my panasonic to my pc by Firewire it shows a window saying to configure AV/C SUBUNIT.
I cant't configure due to the lack of drivers. I have already searched on web, but i haven't found a thing.
Hope any of you to give me an help.

there have been some suggested solutions to this , including what i read in a copy of the manual.

if it is to record back to the recorder , another user here has stated that the analogue in is sometimes better than the firewire from a camcorder.

Unlunky,

Your Panasonic recorder (like most) has a one way 1394 port - it cannot hold a conversation with the editing software.

The good news is that (as Gary said) S-video input works really well on Panasonic DVD recorders like yours.

In desperation I then borrowed a cheap 1394 three port card from my dad which came with a different driver (Texas Instruments). I couldn't believe it when this just simply worked after weeks of frustration with both Premier (6.0) and the noddy Windows video capture program that comes with XP.

I have now captured many many hours of DV without any dropped frames. I have full functionality being able to control the camera functions and batch capture using timecode.

I was really on the point of giving up and believing that my camera was not fully 1394 OHC compliant as the blurb that comes with the DVConnect suggests (Canon and JVC).

The ironic thing is that Premier guide states that capturing DV is simple. They should read this forum!!

Hope this helps - Keith

Hi Keith. As this post dates back to 2003, you may not get this, I have PM`d you anyway. You stated you had a canon MV30, which eventually did work through firewire. I have a MV10 which i am assuming this is very similar. Brought my firewire card through ebuyer, PC picks up card fine but no jpoy on locating the camcorder when plugged in.

Dont suppose you have any idea what card you were using, you mentioned texas instuments. Is this software or hardware.

Intrestingly enough, I have just found this on the internet. Check it out, looks like its on about compatability with firewire cards. It lists a lot of oldish camcorders.

There's no problem your reopening this thread.

However, I think that the compatibility list your refer to is for only one brand of cards, rather than being a list showing that a particular camcorder will/won't work with different makes/models of card - which is what you really need.

Actually, what I think your really need is to follow the advice I gave in reply to your original thread about the MV10

And then tell us what you found out.

No luck at all getting 3 different cameras (Sony DVR TRV 230E Pal) and 2x JVC to work and two pc's.
Old pc that used to work now does'nt..thought the firewire cable died, replaced it but still no joy.
borrowed JVC dv camera from a friend, tried it in his pc before i left with my old cable...works fine.
Bring it home does not work.
New machine, specs listed in my signature below, tried Windows XP SP1 and SP2
Tried upgrading from SP1 - 2 and tried copy with XP SP2, tried several fixes, one was a third party patch, tried Windows update on issue that was slowing firewire 800 down to 100 speed, tried forcing old SP1 drivers onto SP2
Have reinstalled XP 5 times in a week.
Each time installing Premiere Pro 7.0
Have tried swapping firewire between mobo bult in firewire and Sound blaster Audgy 2 with firewire. have tried with both!
Have tried with PowerProducer.
Now going to get my friend to bring his XP pc over with external Sound blaster with firewire to my house.

My Fiance is going to leave me cause i can't edit my friends wedding video.
I'm at my wits end.....can anybody help me??

Still no success, I'm starting to think it might be my motherboard but i'm not entirely sure.
I'm getting a friend to bring his working PC with firewire and and Adobe premiere pro to my house.
I'm also going to by another firewire card..i've seen cards with a VIA chipset, something different from my on board firewire and Sound Blaster Audigy2 with firewire.

We have see some mother boards where there is the option for front or rear firewire port connections and it is possible to have the one you are trying to use disabled or not connected. Both of these motherboards have a rear connection and also I believe an optional front panel or external connection. It is worth carefully looking at how these are set up, since what usually happens is that the one you are plugging into is the disabled one, and therefore you don't get the device detection

I would look in device manager and see how the firewire shows up, you might also look in the bios on the mother board, and of course if you have access to the manual for your Mother board you might look at jumper settings.

Wel what can i say.
First of all. since the firewire is onboard. i have made sure that the IEEE1394 is enabled in bios. secondly yes i have opened my box several times to check if the front port is properly connected to the motherboard. thirdly i tried to insert my optional bracket supplied on the other socket on the motherboard & also tried to put it on the front port socket.
But after all this . -==No Luck==-

I've tried to find this option in my bios and checked the manual for the motherboard, once again, nothing.:(
I bought a firewire card with a VIA chipset in it this morning and took it back this afternoon, same again...nothing:mad:
I noticed that my own camcorder is not dead on the firewire, as it knows it is connected as it displays this in the viewfinder as DV IN.
Pitty it doesn't show up on the LCD screen, anyway I have my friend coming round for a BBQ and bringing his PC with a working firewire.
If it still works here and there isn'nt some cosmic force preventing firewire from working in this house, i'll copy the firewire drivers from his i386 and windows inf details and put them in mine..if this doesn't solve the problem then I'll be bringing my motherboard back and demanding an exchange, and pay a little extra even for an AUSUS mobo.
This has gone beyond a joke!!!
If anyone has any suggestions I'd be really pleased to hear from you.
Bear in mind I have another PC that was working (MSI Mobo - creative sound card with firewire) till I bought and built this one, now the old one doesn't work on firewire either....It's insane I know!

What software editing application are you trying to run with the firewire connection?

is it possible that the preferences have been re set and that it is looking at an analog input on the graphics card as the input?
Does your NLE show 1394 as input, and DV? I have also seen cases where the settings get re set and you find that it is looking at the wrong card for input

I wish Sharyn, but alas no.
I'm using adobe premiere pro 7.0 and I've checked the preferences for capture, all it picks up is DV 1394 firewire I've tried all the different controller settings for the cameras i've been sing but premiere sees them as both offline.
I've gone looking for it to be picked up by windows movie maker....no go.

The camera knows its plugged into the computer and windows knows there is a firewire card but there is no control or data flow

do you actually see windows detect the camera or is it just that the dv-in display appears on the camera lcd?
you are using and external 1394 card?

One other thing to try is to go into device manager after you have plugged in the camcorder, does the camcorder show up as a 1394 device? Does 1394 show up under bus controller and also under networking ?,
You might have tried this, but check to see if there are newer device drivers from gigabyte. you can go into device manager, delete the device, power down the pc, if you have an external card remove it power back up the pc, install any new drivers when it re finds the 1394 controller. check device manager, plug in the camcorder, see if windows finds it.

sometimes plug in the camcorder turned off, then turn on the camcorder to vcr mode, see if the system finds it then

it certainly is possible that you have a bad 1394 chip on the mother board .

Sharyn,
It's just that the dv-in display appears on the camera viewfinder only, not lcd screen.

Windows does nothng, on my old PC when it worked, it would make a noise and then pop up a window asking me what program i would like to use, Adobe premiere pro, Windows movie maker and so on.
On the new PC it does not do this. And now it does not do this on my old PC.

I've used the internal IEEE 1394 on the Gigabyte mobo.
I've used the Creative sound blaster Audigy with firewire on board, no external breakout box with that one.
I bought and tried and retuned a Firewire card from Dick Smith electronics
http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/4477d1f8027774462740c0a87f9c0755/Product/View/XH6660
This is not the exact same card. It was a DSE branded one which is compatible with XP SP 1 and 2

I've used my friends pc last night (with Audugy and breakout box) which DID work with his camera before he lent the camera to me.
Last night i plugged it in to his pc again, this time it did not work...have I stuffed his camera??
I checked the firewall settings and the settings for the camera in Premiere pro on his machine
It still records and plays back and so does mine...firewire through this motherboard does not work.
I have a feeling that the motherboard has short circuited both cameras or just has compatability issues with anything firewire related.
I've checked Gigabytes website for Australia and the support is pretty weak.
I can't find any warranty details either. I've been working on this problem for over 3 weeks and I have passed the timeframe to return the board for exchange.
In device manager 1394 shows up under bus controller and also under networking.
I've tried uninstalling powering off reinstalling with various different drivers.
I've tried forcing old drivers onto service pack 2
I'v now formated and reinstalled XP SP1.
I'm at a loss

If your friends camcorder does not work on his pc anymore, then perhaps you have damaged something. What 1394 port was it connected to on your pc? or did you try it on all of them? It is possible that you have a bad port or that the connector to your mother board in on the wrong pins and has shorted out something.
Think at this point you are going to have to find someone to bring it to to check it out.
The fire wire port from the mother board has a power feed on it, it is possible the the connection plug was put in the wrong way, and that you fed power on the data lines, and damaged something. While there are 6 pin to 4 pin cables, they do not allow the voltage to pass over the 4 pins, I guess it is possible that your plug in to the mother board in the wrong way around??

Sorry I cannot be of more help

I'm thinking the same thing at this point. It is a very tight connector on the motherboard, unlike anything else on it, much force is needed to plug it in without possible damage.

I'm going to try to get my motherboard switched over if I get too much resistance from the retailer and gigabyte I'll go and buy a ASUS instead.

Does anyone have any suggestions to a board which would be better that Gigabyte or ASUS?

Thanks for your help Sharyn, this is a huge thread, I thought it might have been forgotten and my pleas for help might have gone un answered.

Stephen.

My Panasonic AG-DV2700 recorder will not work properly with XP, but will function correctly using Windows 2000 Pro. I use Liquid Edition. The DV2700 is a full size DV edit recorder with tuner. The problems occur when capturing in Edition - OK when the O.S. is Win 200 Pro, big problems when the O.S. is XP Home, SP2.

It is interesting (well technically) that there are a series of problems with sp2 coming up now.

It is always worth making sure you have the latest drivers, and the lastest motherboard bios support since there are some instances where there have been problems

In addition back in 2004 Microsoft issued a patch for firewire, that you might want to try. It seems that in their wisdom of trying to detect firewire 100 400 and 800, on some systems they screwed things up with newer camcorders that had a higher speed version.

SOME PEOPLE SEEM TO HAVE PROBLEMS FINDING THE EXACT STRING MICROSOFT IS TALKING ABOUT

The instructions tell you to look for this registry entry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI\1394_hc_hw_id\1394_instance_id\Device Parameters

You won't find key entries 1394_hc_hw_id\1394_instance_id. Those are identifiers which refer to your 1394 interface card and will vary from installation to installation.

To find what they are for your own computer, goto Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager. Then look for your 1394 host controller which will be located inside something like IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers. Right-click on the controller and select Properties. Goto the Details tab, ensure Device Instance ID is selected in the pull-down, and the long string of letters and numbers in the box is what you are looking for.

Look for the key under PCI which matches that string, open Device Parameters in there and add the new DWORD for SidSpeed.

Here is a link to RME A audio manufacturer with some of their approaches,

http://www.rme-audio.com/english/techinfo/fw800sp2.htm

If that does not work this is more of a long shot if the problem is only with some software.

Another area which we have seen come up mainly with audio systems (digidesign's protools for instance) is what is known as Data Execution Prevention (DEP) this is a feature in sp2 that if the hardware processor has it protects certain memory areas. Protools for instance used it as part of the copy prevention system, and on some systems we found it was needed to either turn it completely off or bypass it for that specific application

My gateway pc
My vaio desktop pc
sony vaio laptop , media tutors machine.
2 x viglen pc's at work in art area
18 dell pc's in the multimedia lab

your problem is either machine specific or you have still got the firewall/anti-virus/Ieee1394 networking causing you problems.

I have finally fixed my capture problem that long plagued me.

WinXP SP2
Sony DVR-TRV320
WAS...Adaptec Firewire Card (TI Chip OHCI compliant)
Premiere 6 and now 7.

Previously I had to use a duel boot system. I spent days trying to get XP to see my camera. I would turn it on and XP would see it and beep, then lose it and beep again...gone! I had to resort to duel boot and do all my capturing on Win2000. Not anymore.
After reading this complete thread (as well as several hundred others on the net), I decided to try changing the card to an ADS Pyro Basic Firewire. $10.00 on Ebay later the unit arrived last night from the States. I notice a Sony iLink icon on the box and think Hmmmm...perhaps this is my lucky day.
I plugged it in, turned on the PC and...ding dong...in goes the card followed by...ding dong...Sony DV Camera. There it is under scanners and cameras clear as day.
Excitedly I start up Premiere, and I'm capturing DV easy as that!

The Adaptec capture card was the problem....BUT only under XP. It worked fine under Win2000. Makes it easy to understand why you would discount the card as the problem, due to the fact it does work (just not under XP).

I hope this helps some other long suffering people.

GREAT NEWS, glad you finally got it working, Probably is some odd driver/implimentation problem, since ads really needs it to work with their pyro drives and converter, they are motivated to make sure it works

VX1000 not recognized by xp...I HAVE IMAGEMIXER...

Sony DCR VX1000 NTSC
Windows XP Home
Pinnacle av/dv 500 capture card
Can't get the PC to see the vx1000...sony says talk to pinnacle, pinnacle says to talk to sony, microsoft says to talk to sony or pinnacle...lol, what a joke!!
Sony finally told me that the Pixela Image Mixer software for Sony cams would solve the issue, so I paid Pixela,(cause as I'm sure everyone knows, the software is impossible to find anywhere!!!), installed it, and, sure as can be....my vx1000 still isn't recognized.
Contacted Pixela for my $$$ back, and they never even responded to my mail...great customer support, I must say. So, if anyone is still looking for the software, jus send me an e-mail. Just my way of saying thanks to the good folks at Pixela for the excellent support they offer. jasong71@sympatico.ca .
