As warned by a forum member, an Epson All-in-One PX730WD printer developed a fault , was returned to PC World, and money refunded.
Has anyone a suggestion for an All-in-One printer that WILL print on to Discs and is currently on sale please? This is the one item that is not very often stated.
Although Epson have said they will be "in touch" (automated reply) they still appear to be "sleeping"

Les, my tip is to check out the price of compatibles to find out if any are available for the printer you have in mind.
I buy all my ink cartridges from here;  http://www.internet-ink.co.uk/  for my Canon MX850 and Canon iP4850 and the now defunct Epsons before them.

Re: PRINTERS
Do be careful to check out any Canon printer properly

We bought a Canon "all in one" last year and it will not print out PDF files

It will print PDF's that it has created via scanning

It also has a mind of its own regarding printing from the storage tray or printing via the single sheet loader

Canon's "Lack of Helpdesk" just shrugged their shoulders and basically said "tough"

Check out www.refreshcartridges.co.uk you`ll find their prices more competitive! Single cartridges for my Canon iP4700 are  £2.77 each for compatable ones.

Barry, prices might be lower but if you check out the amount of ink in each cartridge you will find that the Internet-Ink.co.uk have more ink in them. Also get an additional 10% discount after first orders.  However must keep this link for the future.

Re: PRINTERS
First objective - to find and buy suitable printer.
Important to be sure,if a fault developes, can it be easily returned without expenses incurred.
As now is Christmas 'rush' it'svery difficult locating a machine. Local suppliers are: John Lewis, PC World and Apple. Comet now defunct.
Considered choice is : Epson and Canon.
Epson PX730WD  quickly developed a fault. Cash refund - PC World.
Has anyone "hands on" experience: Epson Expression XP600 or Canon Pixma MG6350?
Epson Expression XP600 was suggested by Epson "Chat". Available: Amazon  £111-99, Apple £109-95.
The Canon MG 6350 - available John Lewis - White only. (£169-95 - Canon £30 cashback) Black replacment time unknown.
Amazon quoted . £128-50.
All suggestions or crticism welcome.

Re: PRINTERS
I would never buy another epson.

If you do any amount of disk printing then a dedicated disk printer is a good idea, getting acceptable results from a domestic multifunction printer will be tricky and the cost of ink is very high.

I have never had an issue returning things to big online retailers such as ebuyer or scan. Unless you live somewhere where petrol is free, your local big stores have free parking, and you have the time and patience for going to shops and demanding refunds then it is unlikely that you can return anything without incurring some costs. Personally I find it much more convenient to have someone collect the faulty item from me and take it away for refund / replacement.  This means i can choose from a much wider selection of stuff, and do not have to suffer the opinion of some teenage sales assistent who thinks they know what i should buy (ie the item where they get the most commission).

I have hands on experience of the Canon Pixma MG5250 (I have one at home, one at office, and bought one for my dad),  and I have Canon IP4850s in the studio.
I have no hesitation in recommending the Pixmas. I've been very happy with them. Have not had PDF issue described above, nor problems with where they choose their paper to print from.

And I've always bought via internet, generally from Scan who have very good return process. But none of these Canons has ever gone wrong, so not had to find out.

I get my refills from www.inkredible.co.uk

http://www.inkredible.co.uk/p/108/inkredible-saver-ink-cartridges-for-canon-pixma-mg5250

Because all the printers use the same cartridges I buy lots at a time, saving even more dosh.

Thank you for posting Sleepy Tom. I have not, personally, had a problem returning goods that have developed faults.
PC World and John Lewis have never caused any troubles. Printing onto disc is only  one of my requirements.
Questions posted on this forum can influence decisions . Others experience can be valuable to avoid disaster.

Thank you Mark. My Canon has now decided not to print colours any more, but has been a good printer.
Can you please tell me;
when printing a picture to cover the complete face of a disc -
can Canon printers now be set for printing right up to the centre hole?
The Canon Pixma i865 did not. A blank circle was left around the centre hole, even when closed to the minimum dimension.

Thanks Barry.Appears it's better than my Canon  i865 was.
From information collected so far it appears that Canon are more reliable than Epson.
It's also difficult to get a spec. that refers to on-disc printing at all.

Re: PRINTERS
Yes, you can print right up to the centre hole. You have always been able to do that BUT Canon's CD Label print software didn't make that obvious.
In order to print right to the middle:
You have to open the Canon CD Label print software and then go file->New
Then file-> select paper and then choose Wide Printable CD from the options and once you've done that you can do a finer adjustment on the size of the centre circle using the adjust circle size setting. The smallest size is 17mm diameter, which I'm pretty sure is only fractionally bigger than the hole itself.
Once you've done this once it always seems to default to the Wide Printable CD option.

Bearing in mind Mark M's post, I bought a Canon Pixma MG5250 after always using Epson printers, and although it's early days, I am pleased with the output. I also 'invested' £15 in a PC World three year care policy, so if  it does fail then I can take it back for an instant replacement.

With regard to the three year 'insurance' at PC World, it may be of interest to know;
PC World do not repair printers, they are exchanged.
If a printer is exchanged the insurance becomes invalid (ends). Read in document obtainable explaining scheme
I returned a faulty Epson PX730WD printer. It could not be replaced.
The full cost was refunded plus the £27 insurance (one year warranty plus two years PCW) -
as the insurance had not been used owing to Epson's first year warranty.

This is'nt how my instant replacement document explains it.  It says - You are entitled to as many new replacement products as necessary during the 3 years of your agreement. (This is part of the instant replacement scheme for products £150 or less).

Re: PRINTERS
Mark.
Regarding your posting 9th December last regarding reduction of hole size when printing on a disc using the Canon programme.
First - from a Canon i865 printer using "Canon Easy Print". This displays CD-Label print window and has a superimposed choice of New, Open and Exit.
Choose NEW. Then browse selects folder and picture. After OK, and to the right side, there is a tab to adjust the size of both circle diameters.
Another dialog box superimposes on the window already there. Select Inner Size for the centre hole.
This allows ajustments from +10mm (= 53mm) to -10mm allowing the minimum centre hole size of 33mm. (minus ten).
A disc has a centre hole size of 15mm.
Is there a way of reducing that or is that what Canon software was, now changed?

With the, now returned, Epson PX730WD it was possible to reduce to 15mm.

With the Canon Pixma MG 6350 the way to display and print on to disc has yet to be found. Wording and method appear to have changed.
A tray must be removed from the printer and an underneath plastic plate removed from that. That plate accomodates the disc. The plate line up is then similar to the i865 method.

I would very much appreciate knowing Canon's present method of display for disc printing and how centre hole size can be reduced, preferably to 15mm?

Hi Les

From my reading of your post I'd say you're not following my instructions above in the right order.
Do this:
File-> new
File-> select paper
click wide printable in the CD type column
Click OK
Then click adjust circle size.
You can get down to 17mm this way.

(I don't have any discs that print that close to the centre. Mine are either 20 or 26mm (Verbatim and Tayo Yuden respectively).)

NOW you can add pictures, text etc etc.

Once you've saved one file with these settings every new file you make defaults to these.

I have recently purchased an Epson PX730 printer along with PC World's 'Instant Replacement' care plan. The words on the accompanying document, (reference KHWEHI dated Oct 2012) has the following words relevant to this thread:

"What are the benefits of Instant Replacement Care Plan?
Unlimited replacement for breakdown and mishaps (exclusions may apply)"

"What should I do if my product breaks down?
If your product breaks down....  ....will be replaced on the spot.
The replacement that we select for you will be a product of equivalent or similar specification up to the original purchase price paid.If an appropriate product is not available the price originally paid will be credited towards a replacement product of your choice.
You are entitled to as many replacements as required during the 3 years of your Care Plan."

"What happens to my Instant Replacement Care Plan if my product is replaced?
If your product is replaced .... ....will continue until the end of your care plan. However, your agreement will end if:
You send the product for repair and it has to be replaced by vouchers, or
The replacement chosen is not eligible for our Instant Replacement agreement. In these cases you can request vouchers to refund the unexpired term of the agreement."

Now my interpretation of the above is that as many replacements as required will be honoured up to the expiry of the 3 year period. If they cannot replace the item with an equivalent, (in my case a photo quality all-in-one A4 paper and disc printer) either at all, or for less than the price I paid (£119.97), they will allow that price against the purchase of a more expensive product. If they cannot supply a replacement product under the upper limit of the Instant Replacement agreement, (£150), they will refund the unexpired Care Plan value.
When Epson replace the PX730 with next year's model, I can't see why PCworld would see this a ineligible other than by price, that replacement product would have a one year warranty itself so my only exposure to less than the full 3 years cover would be if both this product and its replacement failed just outside their manufacturer's warranties, but I would have had almost 2/3 of the Care Plan's value returned.

I have the user text instructions from the downloaded CD manual but cannot find, so far, the (picture of) the window to actually use it.

Steve. I will check the text again but have posted the relavant part in the earlier posting. Letter is not to hand at this moment.

MARK.The Printer PX730WD was sold off at PC World at half price. I was told a replacement could not be supplied, so money was refunded.

I was told a similar new printer could be available later (probably February) but would be double the price of the PX730WD

From current experience (very short time) I would have preferred the Epsom PX730WD. It seemed easier in use for producing a disc with a surface picture
Epson appear to have  a much simpler process._

I've just bought a Canon ip7200 (because my Epson has dried up) to print DVD's it's quite a substantial machine for only £58.00 from Amazon. My problem is I can't find the print CD software, only in 'My Garden' which are preset templates, you can't delete items that you don't want, the only blank disc there is has all the text at the bottom and you can't move it? has anyone else had this trouble? the manual doesn't seem to tell you much at all. Is there any software I can get for this? or maybe I should use a photo program and bring it in as a background?

Mine is a Canon MG 6350 All-in-One from Amazon £99-99 incl.£30 cashback, free del.
CD printing problem is same. From supplied CD the manual shows 7 pages refering to
CD-Label Print. Cannot find this software. Was expecting similar to my "Dried-up" Cannon i865.
That provided Easy-Print Toolbox which had similar screens to those 7 pages. Also provided was Zoombrowser EX and Easy Photo Print. Have not seen any reference to these yet - if they are supposed to be here.
I think downloads are possible as updates were with the i865. Be careful though. Must be done in stages sometimes.
I have emailed Canon. Will post answer. Hope this helps.

Hello Mick, I have a canon mg5250 and disk printing software is supplied on the setup CD Rom. I have downloaded the manual for your printer (ip7200) and I think that there is quite a lot can be done through the 'My Image Garden' software. I think that still images can be captured from video, (and probably other sources) and I presume they can then be imported into the 'Image Garden'. I did'nt find out how to print around the disk (in a circular direction - as I was able do with my Epson PX720W) but text can be added across the disc. I'm not sure how helpfull any of this is, perhaps you could download the online manual and see if you can find a way of achieving your particular objectives. I found that I had to use the 'search' function quite a bit, and then sift through the subjects thrown up.  Tony C.

Re: PRINTERS
I have found a solution that works well (although not ideal timewise) I created a 120mm circle in Serif 11, did my artwork, then selected all and right clicked to convert to picture (bmp), copied and pasted into Photoshop and saved as jpeg (My Garden doesn't see bitmaps) went to one of canon's templates chose the most blank one, set the background to photo and brought in my creation, it fitted perfectly, all I had to do then was to get rid of 3 text boxes with 'type text here' in them, so I just turned the text white, the printed disc was, if anything, better than I'd had from the Epson. Some might say why didn't I do it all in Photoshop? my answer is it's 100% easier in Serif.

Mick. Although of not much help, there is a recent article about the M6350 printer that mentions difficulty finding Label-Print.
It does state it is in the section "My Image Garden". (www.pcadvisor.co.uk).
Although I replied to Canon days ago, stating my operating systems (as asked), there has been no further progress.
Another email has been sent asking if they knew the capabilities of their Canon printers.

Why don't you just make your labels in Photoshop? You'll get far better results than using the crappy software that comes with the printer.

Download a PSD template form http://pixma.ulmb.com/?cat=34 to get your artwork in the correct place on the disk. You can then print to disk directly from photoshop.

Tom, thanks for the link but current Pixmas have a different tray, "G", which doesn't work with the templates on that site, which are quite old now.

Re: PRINTERS
Results for Canon printers; Label-Print.
Start My Image Garden. Select images wanted for a disc label. Click Disc Label from New Art. Set the theme.
Edit item. Click print - bottom of screen.
Have not used; nor will. Obviously requires own images to print own requirements.
The above is where buried!

Re: PRINTERS
I looked at that method Les which gives the same results as what I was doing, the problem is that however you produce the art work whether it be Photoshop or Serif you are still stuck with 3 text boxes saying 'type your text here' on top of what you've created, I got over it by turning that text white, which is ok if you're using a white background, but I don't know what you would do if you were using a coloured background other than making use of those boxes.

Mick
I did explain. A great deal of typing.
It was denied by the forum . I did complain. Perhaps they will relent and post.
Use email if you would like to hear again.
I have better things to do than keep repeating because of the new forum inefficiency.

CD Label print is here:

I would give that a go - it's basic but functional.

My image garden is new and by the looks of things not many people are using it to make discs hence the lack of specific advice for that software,

Re: PRINTERS
Thanks from me also Gavin, it works great, I was a bit worried at first because the ip 7200 series is not mentioned in the printers list.

Re: PRINTERS
Mick - My printer also was not mentioned in the printers list, although details and pictures of use are detailed in the instruction manual - on the installation CD.
Although it appears identical to the program used with the Canon Pixma i865 it failed to install from that installation CD. (Probably due to different Windows system). All my thanks to Gavin.
