Hi,
I am chasing one of these DVD writers, preferably the retail version, but nobody seems to have them in stock right now.
I understand this is something to do with the recent firmware upgrade and the new model being introduced - but does anyone know of a supplier in the UK with stocks at the moment?
Hope you can help.
Regards,
Paul
I am not in the Uk but i can get you one if you want what is the price in the UK with postage would be approx . I have just left the uk and i just bought one in Taiwan where we have an office.

Try,
www.lynxdv.com
http://security.cclcomputers.co.uk/acatalog/index.html
Sony at £256 inc vat at the above link.
Also has the Sony ext drive.
We have ordered from this sight and can say that delivery etc is as good as anyones, support is ok aswell.
I got my Sony from CCL -- they have a small surcharge for using a credit card, but otherwise they sre pretty good
Thanks for the replies.
Both Overclock and Lynxdv are out of stock but I have e-mailed CCL as I cannot determine from their site if they actually have them in stock.
Hopefully they will have and I'll have one very soon.
Thanks again.
Paul
Apparently all UK stocks have been recalled due to a compatibility problem? (info from PlanetPC).
I have mine on order with them but if anyone finds UK stocks or knows when they are due to be shipped, please let me know.
quite a few in stock....33 at the last count.
www.novatech.co.uk
Mesh sells them for £169 + VAT
Just an update - CCL are out of stock also.
Novatech has the older model (DRU500) but it isn't the retail version. Uncle Bob C at the Video Forum recommended I should look for the retail version at the same price.
So still looking.....
Paul
Actually Novatech did have the retail version in stock yesterday - DRU500A @ £280. Straight after I mentioned it, I checked the site and they had 26 left.
Whereas the OEM version (DWU-10A) aka DRU500 OEM according to Novatech was on order but no stock. This was priced round about £260.
But today, no mention of the DRU500A, so it seems like it's all sold out.
BTW, the retail versions of the DRU500A and the supposedly newer one, the DRU500AX are identical hardware except the AX has the latest firmware which allows 4x DVD+R recording. Updating the firmware of DRU500A to the latest has the same result.
I have the DWU-10A which was supposed to come as a bare drive but it came with VOB Instantcd/DVD inside. I already have burning software anyway so wasn't bothered whether I got any with it or not.
So unless you require software, there isn't any difference really between the retail or the OEM versions, except £20.
Thanks Duckman,
You are absolutely right - I saw the 500A yesterday at £280 but today it has gone.
I don't mind waiting a short while if I can save arond £25 as I don't have any deadlines to meet right now. The saving will buy me a few DVD discs to play around with. I do need software though as I am new to DVD authoring.
Regards,
Paul
DRu500a Pc world direct are due in on the 3rd march around 300 but! 208 are sold! £199 +vat
Thanks Bonehead,
I have ordered from PC World (god I never thought I would ever say that) but at £245.52 (inc VAT and delivery) I don't mind waiting for around 10 days.
Regards,
Paul
Just received my Sony DW-U10A from MESH. Paid £169 + VAT + £5 P&P, and it is in stock. Word of warning - comes as bare drive with a copy of Nero 5.5 and PowerDVD.
Hi,
£169 is a great price but I do need the full software as I am new to DVD writing. Although I am paying more PCW Business promise "Extensive software suite included" - yeah I know it's PC World so I'll have to wait and see but I am assuming it is the full retail package.
Regards,
Paul
Motionwerk,
I have looked on the Mesh computer web site, but don`t seem to be able to find the Sony mentioned anywhere.
I assume it is Mesh.co.uk ?
How did you find it and buy it?
Regards
Paul
I believe the Sony DVD writer is only available as an upgrade to owners of Mesh computers.
John

Could you tell me who you spoke to or which branch as enquiries at my local branch brought nothing but blank looks - nothing new there!
TIA
Hi TIA,
I didn't speak to anyone but I ordered on the PC World Business site.
Try the following URL:
http://www.pcwb.com/servlets/Catalogue?id=(140652)&PageCat=ProductQ
I have had confirmation and they were hoping some would be in yesterday. Nothing from them since but I am expecting some news next week.
By the way, were you expecting anything other than blank looks from the staff at PC World?
Hope this helps.
Paul

Seems awfully cheap - does it come with all the relevant software?
Well it says on their website "Extensive software suite included" so I am hoping so.
Paul
CCL Computers at Bradford. Order today and have your writer next week.

have you received your drive yet, any issues?

I haven't received mine either.
PCW Business didn't get the DRU-500A stocks in but now expect them at the end of the month. I cancelled the order and have now ordered the DRU-500AX from dabs.com - no stocks yet but at least I get the latest model (and it still comes with the software bundle). Perhaps PCWorld would have also got the 500AX in but I didn't want to take the chance.
Although it is always easy to have a go at PCWorld staff, I found the lady I spoke with extremely helpful and friendly. She called me back when she said she would, she kept me up to date with developments and also gave me her direct line should I decide to cancel the order - a definite unexpected surprise for the Dixons Group and well done that lady! If PC World Business is reading the lady is Jane Kershaw.

Today I went to a local computer fair at Kettering, Northants. There were three dealers there with stocks of the Sony DRU500-AX and I bought one for £265 from www.komputerkrazy.com. They were recommended to me by an adjacent trader who I have known for years. They do mail order, and have a nice clear web site so you might get one from there. Hope this helps someone.

Hi to all previous respondents.
I to am desperate to obtain one of this drives. I have seached the web using all of the links previously mentioned in this thread. All those mentioned, along with many retailers not mentioned in this thread, are all awaiting stock. Sorry one supplier www.komputerkrazy.com has hiked his price to £314.95 (they must be joking).
Any help with CURRENT availablity would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Alan
I am also after one of these drives but I noticed today that the Sony Style website claims it has been discontinued - can this be true?
For what it's worth I still haven't received my drive from dabs.com.
Paul
Scan Computers have the OEM version of the DRU-500AX it's called Sony DW-U10AX.
Price inc vat and postage is £269.08.
Phone 0870-755-4747
GOT ONE AT LAST!
Alan
What is the OEM version and are there any disadvantages?

OEM = no bundled software, no nice printed box, no instructions.
If that's OK for you (i.e. you already have what you need, or you can acquire it separately) you might as well save the money.
I bought OEM versions of my Pioneer 104, memory sticks and HDD from Scan, no problem if your're confident about installation or know a good techie! And it saves you money, which in this game where upgrades are a regular occurance, is no bad thing!
I picked up one of the OEM writers this afternoon - the model no. is DW-U10A.
Is the missing X at the end significant?
Norman
Hello to all,
I am also waiting for one of these drives.

The problems arise if they are dead on arrival or fail later.... then you have a fight on your hands with Scan!
Chris
At risk of stating the obvious there a quite a few available on EBay. I just won one for £265.
