Hi. I hope someone can help me. I put a lot of my work on YouTube and have a lot of hits.I have received emails saying I must upgrade my account which now has to linked with google. The email states that I have not completed reistration and must upgrade or the account will be closed. The email says says click here to upgrade. I click on the appropriate place and it tells me nothing on how to upgrade. I thought I was upgrared as I sign in to Google with user name and password for google youtube link and I iaccess my channel immediately. I don't want to lose my account but don't know what to do. I've tried to contact YouTube and have found the form to fill in but it won't accept my date of birth. I keep putting in thje date and then click on submit and the message come up again please enter your date of Birth. I'm getting quite stressed with it all. At my age I can do without it. SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP
I have been on you tube for several years now and have not had to update or upgrade to get any extra features.
I suspect this is a scam e-mail that is fishing for your personal details.
Agreed, sounds like a phishing email. Suggest you login to YT and change your password ASAP. YT and Google can use the same login - if you have a google account you can login to YT. If you've had a YT account for a good few years before Google bought it, it is possible you will have to link the accounts - see this page: http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?answer=1142412
I still don't understand. I Can log ionto my YouTube account by logging in Via google ac count and google password and the original Youtube username and password no longer works. I presumed rightly or wrongly that the accounts are linked. If they are then why the emails telling me to complete registration. Unless it is a scam. I am frightened to do nothing in case it's geniune and I lose the youtube account which shows a large number of hits.
Same thing happened to me - I can't access my youtube account - any attempt to sort it just logs me in with my facebook details, not my original youtube ones. Password recovery returns my facebook ones which leaves my youtube videos there, and viewable - but I can't do anything.

Is this an email to just your normal email address? If you get a genuine email from Youtube it should also appear in your Youtube account "Inbox" and be addressed to you directly and not anything generic like "Youtube user".
If it's not a genuine YT email and you've tried logging in by clicking any links in the email then the damage is probably been done and you've been "phished".
With some email programs you can view where any links go to by hovering your mouse over the link, it should read something like *****@youtube.com
This, on the YT forum is worth reading - seems you're not the only person with concerns!

There's an email link in that post if you're having problems - https://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/request.py?&contact_type=linkissue

David. Thanks for your interest. The message from YouTube is to my normal Email address only and doesn't appear in the message box of my YouTube account. I have tried sending message to YouTube support and have filled in their questionaire and it won't accept my date of Birth or my query question. When I click onto submit it repeatedly asks for date of Birth and query details again. I'm afraid the detailsd how to complete registration is over my head. I did try to register again and the message told me that I was already linked to the youtube account. I have received another Email as a final notice so I presume clicking on the first link in the first email did not activate anything. Roy
Hi Roy,
I recently had a similar form filling problem on another website and gave up after 2 tries.
I don't have a YT account myself (as clients load their own content), but wonder if it is because your browser has certain options isabled/enabled, like 'enable javascripts' and so on.
Maybe try a different browser (or same browser on different pc), and check it's the latest version, as any necessary functionality for form completion, may then be enabled.
Or it could be your security software preventing popups and the like - which may be used for 'List of values' generation, such as year of birth.
HTH.
Roy,
Are the emails from YouTube addressed to your correct YouTube username?
e.g. If your username/channel is "Roy1" does the email say "Dear Roy1" or something else?
Now here's a coincidence - I just had the same email only mine was in Spanish
I was happy to click the link after checking it (I use an old Mac just for surfing so wasn't too bothered by any nasties in the email).
The link took me to a YT page with one of my email addresses as my username, I told it I couldn't remember the password and I got a password reset within seconds to my email address.
Turns out it was a genuine YT account I had setup when YT first started and I just wanted to have a look see - I know it was my account as it used a mickey mouse address and postcode only I would have entered. After checking all the info, I then deleted that old account and my current YT still works fine.
So Roy, I'm guessing you possibly have 2 YT accounts including an older YT account you've never used and never linked to Google.
David. I am sure I have two accounts, but I only remember linking up one YT account with google. As I say, I log into Google and scroll down the google list of programmes and click onto You Tube and my original account opens with all my uploads. This account as the user name of " royfromdurham" I've just uploaded a new video to this account and YT had to contact me regarding the upload and they sent me an email addressed to Royfrom Durham. The Emails about registration and linking was address to royWCS. My email address is "roy.wcs@talktalk.net" To log onto Google I had to use my Email address ansd a password. So I don't know which account the emails are referring to. Roy
Roy, looks like we've found the answer with your 2 accounts and it does sound as if your primary account has been already linked but you probably need to make sure.
The emails about unlinked accounts are probably referring to this one:
Whereas the actual account you use now is here:
http://www.youtube.com/royfromdurham
Does that help?
Thanks David and Gavin. Logig says that you are both right in your conclusions, but I have found that logic doesn't always prevail in the world of the internet. There's no way I know how to be sure of which account the emails refer to. I have tried in vain and now I will have to wait for the deadline date to see which account survives. If my primary account is removed then I won't bother with YouTube anymore, I just can't bother with all the preparation of the old videos to upload again with the loss of the original number of hits. Roy
David. Gavin. Panic over. You were right in your conclusions. The deadline date for linking has passed and my main YouTube account remains active. It would appear that I had a previous account which I had forgotton about and had never used. It would appear that this is the account that has been closed. Thanks to everyone who replied to this thread.
Roy, good to hear, glad it's all worked out OK.
