VOB Extraction ?

Hi,

I'm trying to extract a VOB file from a DVD which apparently isn't copyright protected...

I generally use ULEAD DVD Workshop for this process - which works fine.

However, with this disc, when I search for the VOB file, it just isn't there. I'm not sure why - but wondered whether there is any freeware which is designed to do this - in the event of DVD workshop not being able to?

SUggestions welcome!!

Will DVD shrink allow me to play my home-burnt DVDs and extract an avi file to put on my Premiere 6.5 timeline for re-editing? I could feed the signal in S or composite from a stand-alone DVD player, but I'm sure there must be a better way.

1. dvdshrink will allow you to extract a single vob file from any dvd
2. rename it to mpg
3. load to any compliant editing system
4. export whatever file type you want.

I can add the long vob file to edius timeline and output a dv file from there , or just feed large vob file thru procoder express and create a dv avi file

Tried DVD shrink for the first time today. Did a double pass (took over an hour to read and compress a 90 min movie + extras) and compressed to 64% to fit a DVD+R. Pretty damn good, sharp and smooth. Feel a bit guilty at the copyright thoughts I have.

Trouble is nowhere could I find how to extract the DVD files and rename them for timeline work. Also, can DVD Shrink compress to VCD or SVCD?

1. let me go home , and i'll work out the 'command structure' to make single vob file , which you rename mpg
2. never tried mpeg1 ( vcd/svcd )

Thanks!

Well it sounds like DVD shrink is what I need.

Just been trying to find it and overwhelmed with the many sites offering it for various prices. Can anyone provide a link to where I can find it for free - or the best deal - as there seems to be so many.

Much abliged! and Happy Xmas

I simply googled for it and about the forth or fifth down was free. Some supply it free but want you to pay a monthly 'update' charge. Can't think why.

VOB to AVI

happy new year and thanks for the info so far...

DVD shrink worked wonders in extracting the VOB file for me.

I now need to be able to convert the VOB to an AVI so I can edit the project .

Any ideas since Procoder won't allow me to do it .

CHeers in advance

procoder will convert a vob to avi ...... or at least the following products do / did for me

1. procoder 2
2. procoder express for edius ( now on version 4.*** )

i bet the vob has ac3 audio and you don't have a ac3 decoder installed ...... visit sourceforge and get an ac3 decoder

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ac3filter/

?

Just checked and my Procoder is Express. That may be why it won't .

I tried to rename the VOB to MPG or AVI (as suggested on inferior forum) but that didn't work - as I expected. Hmmm

What to try . I'll do the soundforge thing and see if that works

Hi
Using QuickTime the tool for this is Mpeg Streamclip squared5.com which also handles some varieties of .avi.

Procoder Express will do it.. just as easily. But you cant rename a vob to AVI, nothing will recognise it!
The ac3 codec from sourceforge is probably what you need

Frustrated

Hi,

I have downloaded DVD shrink and somehow managed to create a MPEG from a VOB ...
However when I have come to do this again, I can't for the life of me work out how I managed it . I can see with the software that I can create duplicate VOBs but can't see how to turn them into MPEGs so that I can edit them.

This problem is getting long in the tooth...

Also downloaded the AC3 decoder but can't see how that helps me bring a VOB into Procoder Express?

Noticed that on my laptop I can indeed rename a VOB to MPEg and bring it into Premier - but this is no real help as I want to edit on AVID on my suite ... ( I could copy files etc but seems a long way to do it...)

Hmm . Very frustrated . How can I do this with DVD shrink ?

Instructions above should allow you to do it.
If not tell me which part you get stuck at , and i'll try and lead you through it.

VOB File what next?

Gary, got the VOB file ok and thanks for the tutorial. Tried just renaming it but Prem Pro 2 will only play 31 secs. I suspect its something to do with the sound being AC3. Followed the link to sound forge but what do I download? Then how do I use it to convert the VOB file to a format the Prem Pro 2 will recognise and can be imported onto the time line.
DVC Core Duo Laptop M575U. What a good company they are.

1. i don't use or have premiere pro2
2. there should be a ac3 codec called , ac3filter , @ http://ac3filter.net/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=18
3. that allows replay and encoding of ac3 audio
4. to convert the vob with ac3 to a pure mpeg2 ( which i assume premiere pro2 can play) i would do the following.

a. womble mpeg-vcr ( http://www.womble.com/products/mvw.html ) will open the vob
b. export from womble , but choose mpg audio instead of ac3 in the audio export tab
c. it should now transcode.

just tested it on a vob file and it works .....

you now have a vob/mpg with mpeg audio instead of ac3

small note from adobes own site

Quote:
Importing and exporting MPEG files in Premiere

Although Premiere can import and export MPEG files, Adobe recommends that you don't use MPEG files as source files in a Premiere project. Instead, use MPEG as the final output format of your project. MPEG files don't lend themselves to editing because the video frames in an MPEG file aren't self-contained. That is, any given video frame contains only the information that has changed from the previous frame. During editing, a previous frame required to fully decompress a given frame may not be present, resulting in poor quality of the final rendered frame.

Thanks

Thanks Gary, I will try that. I've seen that comment about mpeg files and Prem Pro 2. All I'm wanting to do is take some old cine films that have been put onto DVD by a Sony DVD recorder and pick out certain sequences for various relations. It will save re-recording the original footage.

then i would suggest you use dvdshrink to cut out the bits you want , basically cut the dvd into all possible sections.
name each one sensibly
then use ulead dvdworkshop to build tailored dvd's for family

Thanks

Gary, I downloaded the 30 day trial of womble mpeg-vcr. It's doing what I want. The new mpg files are read by PP2 and can be edited ok to produce DVD's for the relatives. Thank you for the advice and help.

Error Message at end of ebcoding process

Hi, I just came across this forum and it has been quite helpful. Regarding DVDshrink. I folloed all your steps and it seems like right before its complete I get a "failed to write-there is not enough space on the disc" message. I don't understand this because I am copying to a external HD with 200 GB free and also tried to my main HD wich has 10 GB free and I get message at 94%. Please help. Thanks in advance.

'Quite helpful'?? :)
The disc they're referring to is the DVD blank you've loaded into the burner.

Hi Tom, thanks for the response. I am actually backing-up to a portable hard drive. How do I get around to this. Do I still have to put a blank into the other drive? Thanks.

You'll have to be more explicit in detailing what it is you're trying to do, and with what kit. What are you backing up onto the portable HDD?

Hi Tom, sorry for the delay. What I'm trying to is back-up a movie to my external HD by using dvdshrink but when it gets to about 92 % , it tells me not enough disc space. I have 200GB free space on this drive. I followed the instructions to back-up by re-authoring above to a t, but right before it finishes encoding...I get this message. Any ideas? thanks

'back-up a movie'? One you've shot? 10 mins or 2 hours of Hollywood? Again - It's not clear what you want to do.

Hi Tom, I want to back up a hollywood movie. No matter what I do it always gives me the not enough space error right at about 92% on DVD shrink.

I can only think there's a glitch in your copy of DVDShrink. Worth uninstalling and reinstalling as a first move. Mine's v 3.2, but there may be a later version.

Do you use the Shrink wizard or do you fiddle with all the settings and do multi-passes? Try the simplest copy I'd say - the results can be amazingly good.

or it's a disney or one of the others using ''faulty directory structure'' on their dvd's.

dvd players play them fine.
pc's etc get in a mess trying to work out how there is 20GB on a disk.

google will answer how you can do this .........

I just want to copy a single chapter from one of my own DVDs and make a self-contained DVD which only contains that chapter and nothing else. Can't seem to figure out how DVD Shrink can do this.

that should be easy , but i need a dvd with chapters on it , so let me make one , and i'll try ripping it apart agian :)

update: DVD Fab Platinum allows you to do that easily , i'll try and knock up a set of screengrabs tonight.
i can no longer get dvdshrink to work on my work pc , something causes it to crash , and other software is more important than dvdshrink.

You can easily do that by using the rearthor mode and selecting the chapter you want

Otherwise any no of Software( Ulead Moviefactory 5/6) or editing software capable of editing mpeg2 ( they can usually also read off a DVD disc) shuld get you there wth minimun hassle

Anyhow see what harlequin come up with otherwise I could lend you my copy of MF5 ( dont use it much these days)

That's what I thought, but Shrink doesn't seem to show me the individual chapters in the 'reauthor' mode. Odd. But thanks for your reply.
